Friday Update

Happy Friday everyone,

We finish another positive week at school. Today the children enjoyed playing outside in the wind although there was an unusual number of seagulls in the playground at lunchtime. However delighted to report the children were putting their number work into practice by counting the seagulls which was not an easy task especially in the wind and also as they kept flying off!!

This week across the school we have learned about Robert Burns and celebrated Burns Day.  As part of Central Two Centuries the children also learned about Up Helly Aa which is a Viking themed fire festival held annually in Shetland.  The Vikings used to be a very popular topic for project work in years gone by.

Also linked into Central Two Centuries the children were made aware of National Holocaust Memorial Day.  Our school log books which are held at the Archive Centre show our school made a number of refugees and evacuees welcome during World War II.

On Tuesday Ms Marshall from Eden Court worked with four classes on heritage through dance which was great fun.  She will continue to work across the classes throughout this term.

Connect Us / See  Saw

From Tuesday next week, we will be moving all of our communications from Seesaw to “School App for Parents”. We are delighted that so many of our parents have downloaded the app already, and we would encourage anyone still to download it to do so before Tuesday.

If you are having any issues accessing the app please let your child’s teacher know. Remember when you download the app you will be asked for a username and pin code.  These are now posted on google classroom for security.

In the coming weeks, each class will set up a school blog to share a weekly update with learning from class. We will provide more information and the links for these blogs soon.

School Improvement

As we move towards the Spring we will be implementing some playground improvements.  We have received some money from our Ward to help with this.  Nurture groups this week have been busy putting up bird boxes around the school to encourage birds to our environment.  Thanks to all and especially to Mr MacLennan who helped armed with his screwdriver.

We would be very grateful if you are able to support us at all with some seeds that we can plant outside as we aim to “soften” the playground.

Parent Council

Our meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday 3rd February from 6pm to 7pm.  We will post the link on Thursday prior to the meeting.

Free Travel

We have had a couple of queries regarding free travel for under 22’s.  Please follow the link for further information.

Home School Partnership Learning

We continue to strive to provide your children with a high standard of learning and teaching every day.  We are aware that many parents across Scotland have some concerns about progress due to school closures.  Again thank you for your support in helping school to be as safe as we can and to stay open.  Working with number bonds is a key skill in numeracy and we hope you will enjoy using the padlet our support teacher has created.  The password is Central.

Please find attached information regarding the new school at Ness Castle.

The team and children said an emotional goodbye to Mrs MacPherson yesterday as she retired from her role as PSA. Mrs MacPherson has worked at Central School for nearly twenty two years and has been an outstanding member of staff who will be missed by all. We wish her all the very best.

Central Two Centuries

Yesterday at 11am the whole school watched “Learn with Lorna” Central School a Case Study. There was a lot of very interesting information about our school history and the children asked plenty of questions.

Thanks to those of you who joined in yesterday, we trust you enjoyed the session as much as we did. Many thanks to Lorna Steele-McGinn who has been supporting us with our project since we started planning it at the beginning of last year for her inspiring presentation yesterday.

You can catch up on:

Eden Court will return to work with the children on Tuesdays. This term classes will have some experience heritage through dance with Ms Marshall. The children are welcome to come into school in more relaxed clothing.

As we move through this anniversary year we continue to replicate events and learning opportunities that children have experienced over time. This month we will begin to replicate Certificates of Perfect Attendance that were given to children who were present every day of the school year. Given our current challenges with Covid we have decided to issue certificates a week at a time instead of at the end of the school year.

Royal Society for Protection of Birds

Next week is the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. Our nurture groups will be leading on this and putting up the bird boxes that were donated to the school in September. You may wish to take part in the survey at home, for more information follow the link.

Connect Us and See Saw

We will be moving to our new communication platform from the beginning of February. Our Seesaw subscription ends on the 31st of January and we will not be able to send or receive messages through Seesaw after that date.

We have attached a leaflet with instructions for joining Connect Us. We will begin posting messages on Connect Us next month, and we would ask you to download the app to make sure we can keep you updated with what is happening at Central School.

Parent’s Evenings

We will hold online parent’s evenings on:

Tuesday 8th February from 4pm to 6pm

Thursday 10th February from 6pm to 8pm

February weekend

School is closed to all pupils on Monday 21st Feb, Tuesday 22nd Feb and Wednesday 23rd Feb. Children should return on Thursday 24th February.
